Cordage winding gearbox
thingiverse
Planning on crafting a bowstring from rawhide, specifically rabbit skin, requires carefully winding two ends in the same direction until they twist together seamlessly. To achieve this, clamp the twisted section in a vice equipped with a drill to exert precise control over tension. Printed components made from PETG have been completed and gears were meticulously cleaned up on a lathe to eliminate any remaining support material. Cuphooks were securely fastened into driven gears, while a woodscrew with its end cut off was inserted into the drive gear - this can be easily attached to a drill. Alternatively, a thin screw (such as an M4) could be threaded through the drive gear and chucked into a drill. However, tolerances on this design might be slightly too tight, necessitating widening of the holes in the model slightly further with a drill to approximately 11mm for optimal fitment. If necessary, lubricate the components with petroleum jelly to ensure smooth operation.
