Valentine's lovers unite on February 14th to celebrate love and romance, a holiday born from ancient Roman fertility rites where women drew names of eligible bachelors from an urn to determine their partners for the feast of Lupercalia. The tradition evolved into the modern-day celebration of Valentine's Day, named after Christian martyr Saint Valentine who performed secret marriages during a time when they were forbidden by Emperor Claudius II, and was subsequently executed on February 14th.
