The Agariciidae are a family of stony corals that build reefs. This family features cactus corals, plate corals, and lettuce corals as members. The family's members house symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae in their tissues which supply them with the energy they need. Members of this family form colonies, being hermatypic (reef-building) corals. They create massive structures often taking a laminar or foliate shape. The corallites are connected by closely packed septa that have smooth or finely toothed margins and do not merge together.
