Coral impacted by climate change.
sketchfab
This coral formation is remarkably aged, spanning between 100 to 200 years old and measuring approximately 2-3 meters across, with the potential to grow even older. Observers can clearly distinguish where the coral remains vibrant and healthy, displaying a pink hue, from areas where it has suffered severe bleaching and succumbed to death, taking on a distinct green-brown coloration. The alarming rate of coral die-offs is underscored by the fact that millions have perished due to the escalating temperatures in the world's oceans. In certain locations, such as the Great Barrier Reef, an astonishing 60% or more of corals have succumbed to bleaching. These ancient, living organisms, many of which are over a thousand years old, form the largest living structures on Earth, providing sustenance for countless marine species and feeding billions of people worldwide. Tragically, these vital ecosystems are facing unprecedented threats from human-induced climate change, as well as other devastating impacts such as bleaching, ocean acidification, coastal development, pollution, destructive fishing practices, and disease.
