Copy of the Temperance Basin

Electroformed copper, electrogilt, electroplated and oxidised - a trifecta of techniques that elevate this Elkington & Co., Birmingham creation from 1852 to new heights. Museum no. REPRO.1852-6 proudly displays this Temperance Basin, a masterpiece replicated from the Louvre's own Caspar Enderlein pewter basin in Paris. The ingenious Elkington team crafted an electrotype from a plaster cast received around 1849 courtesy of German archaeologist Dr Emil Braun. Before reproduction, they cleverly blanked out the titles on the silver panels and added ornate detailing to the borders, setting this piece apart. Interestingly, twelve years later, the Ladies' Singles Trophy at Wimbledon was electrotyped in silver from the same pattern, a testament to Elkington's innovative expertise.
