Copt Howe (Rock Art) Excavations - North

Copt Howe / Langdale Boulders are ancient carved rocks nestled in the heart of Great Langdale, Cumbria, England. Elaborate markings on the stones mirror those found in passage tombs, particularly in the Boyne Valley, Ireland, dating back around 3000BC. In June 2018, Prof. Richard Bradley and Dr Aaron Watson spearheaded an 11-day excavation, digging four trenches for further exploration. To learn more, visit Dr Aaron Watson's dig journal at http://www.aaronwatson.co.uk/journal/2018/7/17/excavations-at-copt-howe-day-1-the-project-begins. This model showcases trench 3 on day 9 (25/6/18), crafted from 15 photographs captured while avoiding Moyra's (an archaeologist at work) head. Close-up shots couldn't be taken without disrupting the excavation process, resulting in some gaps in the mesh. At this end of the rock, skilled carvers leveraged natural features to create rings around pre-existing depressions. Later phases of the excavation revealed stones placed strategically around the base, mirroring a similar pattern seen in trench one.
