This venue is named after Victor K. Copps, a former mayor of Hamilton. Construction began in 1983 and was finished in 1985 at a total cost of $33.5 million plus an additional $2.3 million for parking garage facilities. Joseph Pigott, a local resident of Hamilton, oversaw the project's completion. Despite initially being designed to attract an NHL team, Copps Coliseum has hosted the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League for the past 12 seasons, starting in October 1996.
