Native copper discoveries have been made in Poverty Point. Initially, it was presumed that the copper originated from the Great Lakes region, but new chemical analyses indicate that some of it actually came from the southern Appalachian Mountains. The raw copper nuggets were not refined through smelting. Instead, artisans used cold-hammering techniques to craft beads, pendants, needles or awls, and even a small plummet.
