This stunning decorative plate originally served as the back of a composite strap end. Strap ends are specialized components designed to complete flat strips of fabric or leather. Its distinctive shape is characteristic of fittings that emerged in the mid-1200s. Archaeologists uncovered it during excavations at Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries and Galloway between 1955 and 1966.
