Pendants like this were likely attached to horse harnesses during the late medieval period. Made from a copper alloy, they would have gleamed with a brilliant shine in their heyday. It's also probable that the recessed panels on the shield would have been adorned with richly colored enamel, catching the light and drawing attention to the rider's status and the horse's owner. Archaeologists uncovered this find during excavations at Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfries and Galloway between 1955-1966. For more information on visiting Caerlaverock Castle, check out our website.
