Coolant Outlet for Chippewa Racing
grabcad
As a member of Chippewa Racing, part of Central Michigan University's Formula SAE team, we annually design and construct a small formula-style race car to compete against universities worldwide. Our latest innovation is a coolant outlet for our Yamaha R6 Sportbike engine that allows the removal of over a foot of coolant hose, making the vehicle lighter and enhancing engine packaging. Traditional manufacturing methods prove challenging due to its irregular shape, necessitating complex workholding and multiple operations. Casting would also be time-consuming as it requires mold production. To overcome these hurdles, we opt for additive manufacturing, which provides a lightweight, strong part with a smooth surface that promotes efficient coolant flow. Given the high-temperature application, ULTEM 1010 on a Stratasys Fortus 480mc 3D printer is ideal, aligning with our cost-effective and high-performance ethos exemplified by our second-place finish in FSAE Michigan 2017's cost event.
