Cookie Cutter Design Process

The aim of this project is to inspire students to take an active role in creating in CAD software. We utilize Tinkercad with our students, but this project can be adapted for use with any program. I have chosen the cookie cutter approach, recognizing that it may seem straightforward, yet the process proves to be far more intricate than initially anticipated. Students are tasked with navigating through negative space design while creating a cookie cutter. This requires them to carefully plan and organize their pieces before bringing them together seamlessly. We guide them through this fundamental process by starting with a star-shaped cookie cutter, which serves as a foundational learning tool. The true challenge arises when students are given the freedom to create and print their own unique cookie cutters. Here, they must apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired during the initial stages of the project. Our approach provides a solid foundation before empowering them to take creative control. As we progress through this process, we aim to infuse the principles of STEAM by integrating science and art into the project. Students learn about the scientific aspects of cooking through hands-on experience with baking cookies, followed by the artistic aspect of decorating using real cake designers' techniques. This project offers a fun and engaging way for students to develop essential skills while connecting their learning to real-world applications. By providing a structured approach, we cater to individual needs and make the learning process more accessible and enjoyable for all. For those interested in pursuing this project, I have shared detailed instructions on Instructables, as well as a comprehensive YouTube tutorial.
