The primary goal of the steel manufacturing process using the LD Converter is to refine the hot metal produced in the blast furnace into crude liquid iron, which can then be further refined in the secondary steelworks. The main functions of the LD Converter are to degasify, remove phosphorus from the hot metal, and optimize the temperature of the steel so that any prior treatment before casting can be performed with minimal reheating or cooling of the steel. Exothermic oxidation reactions occurring during the process generate a significant amount of thermal energy, far exceeding the necessary heat to reach the target temperature of the steel. This extra heat is used to melt iron ore and waste additives.
