The Convair CV-580, a popular medium haul, medium load transport aircraft used by commercial airlines during the 1960s and 70s, was replaced by jets like DC-9 and 737s in the late 70s and early 80s. Essentially, it was an upgraded version of the CV-340 with Allison Turboprop engines for greater power, speed, and efficiency. Initially designed for smaller regional carriers as a replacement for the CV-340 and Martin 404, this aircraft served many smaller carriers for freight and charter operations well into the 2000s. Although most are now out of service, some can still be found in operation worldwide.
