Available in various formats, it was built as an upgrade from the CV-340 and Martin 404, employing Allison Turboprop engines for enhanced power, speed, and efficiency. The Convair CV-580, a prominent medium haul transport aircraft in the '60s and '70s, served major and regional airlines until the late '70s and early '80s, when jets like DC-9 and 737 took over. Despite being replaced by jets, it continued to serve smaller carriers for freight and charter operations well into the 2000s. Although many are now out of service, some CV-580s remain operational globally.
