Constantin Prezan led a remarkable life as a Romanian general during World War I and later became a Marshal of Romania. Born on January 27, 1861, in Butimanu, Dâmbovița County, Prezan's military career spanned several decades. In 1915-1916, Prezan commanded the 4th Army Corps with distinction. He then took on an even greater challenge as head of the Romanian Fourth Army during the tumultuous Romanian Campaign later in 1916. With unwavering leadership, Prezan guided the Romanian Armed Forces as they retreated into northeastern Romania (Moldavia) and fought bravely in the Battle of Bucharest in November 1916. Prezan's strategic prowess was put to the test in July and August 1917 when he successfully halted the German invasion led by Field Marshal August von Mackensen. With the able assistance of Lieutenant-Colonel Ion Antonescu, Prezan thwarted the enemy's advance and preserved Romanian territory. Throughout his illustrious career, Prezan continued to serve with honor and distinction. He played a pivotal role in shaping the Romanian National State during the campaign of 1916, earning him the Mihai Viteazu Order, Third Class for outstanding deeds of merit, courage, and devotion. In the summer of 1917, when he commanded the General Army Quarters, Prezan was once again recognized with a prestigious award – the Mihai Viteazu Order, Second Class. His remarkable service during the Hungarian-Romanian War (November 1918-March 1920) in battles such as Bessarabia, Bukovina, and Transylvania earned him yet another commendation from King Ferdinand – the Mihai Viteazu Order, First Class. Prezan's impressive military career culminated in his promotion to Marshal of Romania in 1930. In recognition of his enduring legacy, a major boulevard in Bucharest bears his name.
