Connector Piece to Convert Empty Filament Spools to a Shelf
thingiverse
Like many makers, I've accumulated a large collection of empty filament spools over time. They turned out to be the perfect size to showcase some Cork Kitty models I had lying around. To display them, I created a quick connector piece in OpenSCAD and transformed two empty filament spools into a small display shelf. Quick and easy. Print Settings Printer: Wanhao Duplicator i3 Rafts: No Supports: Yes Resolution: 0.25 Infill: 20% Notes: I only use supports for the bottom lip, as shown in the image above, to ensure it lies completely flat on the bottom roll. The top lip tapers up at a 45-degree angle and doesn't need any support. How I Designed This I designed this project using OpenSCAD (source code included). The outside diameter of the insert pieces is 52mm, which fits perfectly inside my MakerGear and ColorFabb filament spools. The top lip is tapered to avoid requiring supports. However, the bottom lip does need supports. When it's tapered well, this piece tends to wobble. But when it's completely flat, it lays better on the bottom filament spool.
