The construction of the project began in August of 1897. By mid-1900, the project had already consumed approximately four and a half million pesos, having spent nearly all of the original budget before even getting started. Following a ministerial agreement, the total figure would rise to 11 million pesos. On July 1st, 1904, the architect was assassinated at his residence, leaving the completion of the project in the hands of Belgian architect Julio Dormal, who honored the original design. The Palace was inaugurated on May 12th, 1906 for the opening of the 45th Legislative Period.
