The Confederation Building stands as a prime example of gothic revival architecture in Ottawa's downtown core. Directly adjacent to the Parliament Buildings on Bank and Wellington Streets, it shares a boundary often considered integral to the broader Parliamentary Hill campus. Originally, homes and businesses once inhabited this plot before the government took ownership via expropriation for new federal building construction. Leading architect Clarence Burritt was instrumental in bringing the vision for this structure to life. Work officially began when Governor General laid its cornerstone on Canada Day - July 1st, 1927 - marking the country's Diamond Jubilee, with full completion taking place a few years later during 1931. Early residents included numerous civil servants and the Department of Agriculture as primary occupants within its walls, though current inhabitants encompass not only employees but also an assortment of Members of Parliament (MPs) and cabinet ministers. Plans for expansion to fill in space surrounding it between the smaller Justice Building are being seriously discussed.
