thingiverse
Meant to be displayed near Confederate monuments to give proper historical context are many of these monuments that speak only of the bravely, virtue and "noble cause" of the Confederacy without mentioning the institution by name that the Confederacy fought to preserve or the cruel, inhumane conditions that slaves were trapped in. The United Daughters of the Confederacy is the organization that put up the majority of these statues, they have throughout the years been frequently accused of history revisionism and have alleged ties to white supremacists. It was not rare for a slave's children to be sold, either for profit or punishment, which broke their will and inspired obedience. Overseers were allowed to relentlessly torture and whip slaves without repercussion, this was often done to break their will and inspire obedience. While it was illegal to kill a slave, it happened frequently and these laws were rarely enforced. Some slaves were killed merely for disobedience. It was illegal to teach slaves how to read and slaves could not sue a white or even testify in court against a white. Female slaves were a frequent target of rape. Escaped slaves were hung, usually in a public place to serve as an example. We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable. No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed, according to the Constitution of the Confederate States of America. Our new government is founded...upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. Slavery had strong support in the South, even among non-slave owning whites who saw it as a sign of wealth that poor whites desired to achieve.
