A Required Reading for the Enraged: http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a56974/charlottesville-virginia-confederate-monuments/ A History Unfolds: The Confederates sought to divide the nation, primarily to maintain their grip on southern black Americans as slaves. The flag's resurgence in popularity didn't occur until the anti-segregation movement of the 1950s and '60s. At that time, the South was still predominantly Democrat. However, the national Democratic party began to oppose segregation, leading to a brief rise of the Dixiecrats who re-popularized the Confederate flag. During the Presidential election of 1964, Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson championed the passage of the Civil Rights Act while Republican Barry Goldwater voted against it. This marked the beginning of the South's shift from Democratic to Republican allegiance. It is this history that fuels accusations of racism against the Confederate flag: created to enslave black Americans and gaining popularity to deny them equal rights. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/06/150626-confederate-flag-civil-rights-movement-war-history/ Note: I was born and raised in the South, so this is not a reflection of Northern bias.
