Cone clutch

Unlike disk or plate clutches, a cone clutch employs two conical surfaces to transmit torque via friction. These clutches generate more torque than their counterparts due to the wedging action and greater surface area. Traditionally used in automobiles, today's cone clutches are mostly found in low-speed applications such as power boats, racing, rallying, and extreme off-road vehicles. Their quick gear shifting feature and partial engagement make them suitable for use in synchronizer mechanisms of manual transmissions and specific limited-slip differentials.
