Ancient Egyptians crafted small clay cones, known as funerary cones, primarily for use in the Theban necropolis. These items were carefully placed above the entrance of a tomb's chapel. Archaeologists have discovered early examples dating back to the Eleventh Dynasty. Nevertheless, these initial cones lacked decorations. As time progressed and the New Kingdom emerged, funerary cones became smaller and more intricately designed with hieroglyphics that revealed the title and name of the tomb owner, often accompanied by a short prayer. Despite their significance, the true purpose of the funerary cones remains unknown, leaving room for various theories including their use as passports, architectural features, or symbolic offerings to aid in the afterlife journey.
