This drum formed part of the Comunn na Feinne Pipe Band, possibly late 1800s/early 1900s. Decorative painting around the drum features the band name and Scottish lion prominently displayed. The Comunn na Feinne Society was a highly esteemed organization in Geelong's social scene. As Australia's oldest Scottish Society, it was established in 1856 with the aim of fostering the "Scottish spirit for games and culture" (Brownhill, 1955, p.260). In 1857, they hosted the first annual Geelong Highland Gathering, which continued uninterrupted until the 1930s when attendance numbers began to dwindle and the society eventually ceased operations. Revived in the 1950s, the Gathering remains a beloved event today.
