Compression Lamps

Compression Lamps

grabcad

Compression Lamps showcase the power of energy through their design. Inspired by GrabCAD's design challenge, I opted for an unexplored theme to leverage 3D printer capabilities in creating complex forms. The lamp was shaped using physics-based simulations like inflation, tension, and compression. However, extreme compressive forces led to the most exciting results, with buckling spheres generating unique ripples across the surface, casting intriguing shadows. Despite these deformities, the overall sphere shape was maintained for a geometrical and sculptural feel. The generative design can create numerous lamps, each characterized by its defining force and pressure, forming a family of bespoke products. The design is compatible with Makerbot 2 Replicator bed (190 x 190 x 140mm), with a 5mm material thickness. The closed mesh STL file is attached. The single surface semi-spherical shape minimizes material use while maximizing size, ensuring reliable printing and self-supporting rigidity. Assembly is minimal.
