I've modified the existing shelf support for my E36 compact. It's not perfect, but it worked well enough for me. If you're unwilling to spend 20 euros on a small plastic clip, I recommend trying an alternative solution. ABS filament might provide more strength, but I opted for PLA and so far, it seems good enough.
