Compact Lunar Sampler

Compact Lunar Sampler

grabcad

The Lunar Sampler features a versatile head that scoops regolith samples accurately while filtering out excess material. In vertical position, samples are poured into a leak-proof container. Rake-style hooks lift rock samples between 10-20mm in size, with geometry designed for precision. Excess sand is filtered out at a 90-degree rotation, allowing visual inspection and pouring into the container. A worm gear mechanism rotates the container, ensuring spaced-out layering and maximum volume utilization. Crafted from aluminum-bronze (worm gear and driving spur) and Teflon (hollow shaft bushing), this device can be mounted on robotic arms or rovers, with a power consumption of approximately 20 watts for a low rpm motor. Note that the animated GIF may appear accelerated and not represent real-time action.
