A way to lower the weight of the compact extruder is to select a shorter motor. Many users utilize nema17 motors that stand 48mm tall. There are motors with the same footprint, but only 40 or 36mm tall. These motors typically produce less power, yet some offer enough torque when the electronics provide full current. This part is designed for J-head style hotends like the Prusa nozzle MKII and thin drive gears such as the MK7 won't fit. You can use the gears and idler from this other model http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:100982 Please note that these parts are intended for a 30mm distance between support holes in the x-carriage of Prusa i3. A new version has been added for 48mm long motors, as well as an error fix to ensure proper idler centering. This design is based on Kliment, Josef Prusa and Shane Graber compact extruders. Please note I created another version with a different hotend attachment after experiencing filament alignment issues with this model. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:168365
