Since we lacked a wooden spool but had access to Autodesk Inventor and a 3D printer, my daughter and I designed a CD Balloon Hovercraft Adapter. The part printed smoothly and securely fastened into the CD's center. For optimal performance, use a smooth surface like our kitchen counter.
