This video (http://youtu.be/xQSYgZHvQwA) showcases Alexmos RC input control for a compact, 2-axis GoPro gimbal. The Alexmos settings can be found in the linked YouTube video. The gimbal was designed to fit within a plane's nose cone and is based on the Alexmos simplebgc hardware/software. The motors have been documented in a previous skeleton gimbal build (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:310676). The board cost $60 from a Chinese seller on eBay, and while the designer likes this design, they plan to create a tighter version with gears. This particular version includes a holder for the MPU6050 accelerometer, which is standard with Alexmos hardware. Assembling the gimbal requires M3 hardware, and PID settings should be lower and more conservative than usual.
