Commuter's Backpack Strap Safety Wearable
thingiverse
This backpack strap attachment is designed as a subtle safety tool for commuters on-the-go. The device includes: An accelerometer A Bluetooth module A microprocessor A vibration motor A rechargeable lithium-ion battery The device remains connected to the user's phone via Bluetooth throughout daily activities, but only sends instructions after a specific sequence of actions is performed: 1. The user flips the device by grasping the tip of their backpack strap and pointing it upwards. 2. The accelerometer detects the change in orientation and a timer starts counting down the elapsed seconds. 3. After a predefined amount of time has passed (for instance, 5 seconds), the device vibrates to let the user know a message or call is queued and ready to send. 4. If the user wants to send a message or call for help, they would then tap the device against their body three times while it's still inverted. If not intending to send a message, they can either ignore the vibration or release the strap so that it returns to its hanging position. 5. If the sequence of actions has been performed correctly, the wearable instructs the user's phone to send a text message or place a call. The sensitivity and final action of the device can be controlled via a phone app. For example, if the user wants the device to be more sensitive to inversion, they could adjust the angle of inclination that initiates the timer. They could also adjust the time required to queue up an outgoing message (3 seconds for high sensitivity, 7 seconds for low sensitivity) or change the type of message sent based on the number of taps input after the vibration (for example, three taps equals current danger, five taps equals impending danger). Within the app, users can select messaging and call settings: Recipients The order of recipients to try and contact Message details (including location data, phone battery life, custom text)
