Commodus, born Lucius Aurelius Commodus on August 31st, 161, and dying as Lucius Aelius Aurelius Commodus on December 31st, 192, ruled Rome for twelve years, from ad 180 to 192. He also shared power with his father Marcus Aurelius as co-emperor until 180, when his father passed away. This marked the first time a son had taken over after his biological dad, similar to Titus who succeeded Vespasian in 79. Moreover, Commodus was the first emperor with both a father and grandfather - who had adopted his father - as the two previous emperors. He was born in the purple, meaning during his father's reign, making him the first of this kind until 337. Commodus' life ended abruptly with an assassination in 192, paving the way for Pertinax to take over. However, Pertinax's rule was short-lived amidst the chaos of the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors.
