Commerce Place is a striking twin tower complex composed of two towering skyscrapers that rise 16 storeys into the air at an impressive height of 81 metres, making it the seventh-tallest building complex in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Situated on the corners of King Street East and James Street North, Commerce Place is situated at a historic site rich in past achievements. The location where Commerce Place now stands once housed the Bank of Hamilton's head office when it was first established back in 1872. As business thrived by 1905, the bank expanded its head office, adding on an extra eight storeys to make it Hamilton's first-ever skyscraper. Notably, during this period between 1898 and 1910, the Bank of Hamilton managed to open a whopping 128 branches in Ontario and western Canada; they, however, lacked any form of representation east of Toronto. Eventually, when the bank merged with The Canadian Bank of Commerce on January 2, 1924, it remained one of the few remaining banks not based in Toronto or Montreal. The architectural minds behind Commerce Place are Pellow & Associates.
