Commemorative Slab, Balmuildy, Antonine Wall
sketchfab
This lower left fragment of a commemorative slab belonged to the Second Legion. Found at Balmuildy before 1698, it measures 25cm by 48cm in size. Though appearing unassuming, this discovery is significant for those studying the Antonine Wall as it confirms that the visible ditch and bank are indeed the Wall commissioned by Antoninus Pius. The inscription reads: "For Emperor Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius, father of his country, the Second Augustan Legion built this under Quintus Lollius Urbicus, the Emperor's propraetorian legate." The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland from the Clyde to the Forth. Constructed around 142 AD and occupied for only 20 years, its ramparts, steep ditches, forts, and bathhouses remain visible today.
