The Hittites were a powerful Ancient Anatolian people who established their empire around 1600 BC in north-central Anatolia at Hattusa. At its peak, this empire dominated the region during the mid-14th century BC under Suppiluliuma I, when it controlled most of Anatolia and parts of the northern Levant as well as Upper Mesopotamia. The Hittites clashed with the Egyptian Empire, Middle Assyrian Empire, and Mitanni from the 15th to 13th centuries BC for control of the Near East. However, the Assyrians eventually emerged as the dominant power and absorbed much of the Hittite empire, while the remaining territories were overrun by Phrygian newcomers. After around 1180 BC, during the collapse of the Bronze Age, the Hittites fragmented into several independent "Neo-Hittite" city-states that survived until the 8th century BC before being conquered by the Neo-Assyrian Empire.
