Erected in 280 BC on the Greek island of Rhodes by Chares of Lindos, this ancient wonder stood tall to celebrate the city's victory over Antigonus I Monophthalmus' son Demetrius I of Macedon, who had attempted to besiege Rhodes in 305 BC but failed. Measured at approximately 70 cubits or 33 meters high - equivalent to the modern Statue of Liberty from base to crown - the Colossus was the tallest statue ever built in its time. Unfortunately, it fell during an earthquake that struck in 226 BC and although some parts were preserved, it was never rebuilt. As of 2015, plans are underway to construct a new Colossus at Rhodes Harbour, despite debate surrounding the original statue's exact location continuing to this day.
