The Colossus of Rhodes was a massive statue of the Greek sun-god Helios, erected in Rhodes City on the island of Rhodes by Chares of Lindos in 280 BC. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, built to celebrate Rhodes' victory over Antigonus I Monophthalmus, whose son Demetrius I of Macedon failed to capture Rhodes in 305 BC. Most contemporary accounts describe the Colossus as standing about 70 cubits or 33 meters (108 feet) high - roughly the same height as the Statue of Liberty from base to crown, making it the tallest statue of its time. The Colossus collapsed during a massive earthquake in 226 BC, although some parts were preserved and never rebuilt again. As of 2015, there are plans to build a new Colossus at Rhodes Harbour, but the original site remains disputed.
