Piotr "Peter" Rasputin was born in The Near Lake, Baikal Ust-Ordynski collective farm in Siberia. He grew up on a remote Soviet collective farm with his mother Alexandra, father Nikolai, and little sister Illyana. His older brother Mikhail had been a Russian astronaut who tragically died in a space accident. Peter's mutant abilities emerged during his teenage years when he saved his sister from a runaway tractor. Professor Charles Xavier discovered Peter's existence and made contact with him. Xavier assembled a new team of X-Men to rescue the original team that was being held captive by the mutant island Krakoa. Piotr reluctantly agreed to join Xavier's new recruits after hearing their mission. Together, they successfully defeated the mutants on Krakoa and Piotr remained in the United States with the X-Men, adopting the code name Colossus. Since joining the X-Men, Colossus has left a lasting impression with his calm demeanor, selflessness, and nobility. While traveling to the Savage Land, a prehistoric jungle hidden deep within Antarctica, Colossus encountered a native named Nereel and had a romantic relationship with her, resulting in the birth of a son whom he would ignore for many years. Colossus was especially captivated by young X-Man Kitty Pryde who fell deeply in love with him from the moment they met. At first, Colossus only reciprocated with a sincere friendship. However, his family remained close to his heart and he frequently wrote letters to them after joining the X-Men. Just a short time after joining the team, Miss Locke kidnapped several X-Men to help free her boss Arcade who was being held captive by Doctor Doom's robot. Among those kidnapped was Colossus' young sister Illyana who had been taken from their collective farm in Siberia and brought to the United States. The X-Men managed to rescue Illyana and she decided to live with her brother at the mansion. Colossus, Illyana, and the X-Men were eventually kidnapped by the evil demon Belasco, ruler of the infernal dimension Limbo. The X-Men successfully escaped from Belasco and returned to Earth but Illyana was left behind in Limbo where she spent years growing up under the demon's influence. In Limbo, Illyana learned black magic and eventually overthrew Belasco to become the ruler of the dimension. When she finally returned to Earth with her brother, she had undergone a significant transformation and now went by the name Magik, a powerful sorceress and warrior.
