Colossal statue of a Sylvanus
myminifactory
The ancient Romans revered Sylvanus, a tutelary deity with dominion over woods and fields, who vigilantly protected forests, plantations, and wild trees alike. His sacred role also encompassed safeguarding the boundaries of fields and husbandmen, a duty he took great pride in fulfilling. In his revered form, Sylvanus was often depicted as a guardian, watching over the land with fierce devotion. The statue of this noble deity underwent restoration twice, first using Paros marble and then more recently with Carrare marble. The base and calf portions of the statue remain the oldest, boasting superior quality restorations compared to the other parts. A notable aspect of Sylvanus's representation is that his head was restored in the likeness of Dionysos, rather than adhering to traditional depictions of the deity. Small sections, including the right arm, were crafted from Carrare marble, showcasing the skill and craftsmanship of ancient Roman artisans. This magnificent statue made its appearance at the prestigious 2017 London Masterpiece Fair, a testament to the enduring allure of classical art and the timeless beauty it embodies.
