Colossal Granite Fist at The British Museum, London

myminifactory

This imposing red granite fist was almost certainly part of one colossal statue constructed by Ramesses II, who ruled from 1279 to 1213 BC. One such statue stands proudly outside Cairo's main railway station, while another lies broken at the modern tourist site in Memphis, crafted from limestone. Other massive granite statues have been discovered, but it remains uncertain which one this left fist belonged to, although it was said to come from a pair that stood guard outside the Temple of Ptah at Memphis. Scholars first noted this remarkable object during the Napoleonic Expedition to Egypt and it arrived at the British Museum in 1802 as part of the Treaty of Alexandria.
