In appreciation, here is one of the British Museum's treasures to hold you over until we receive the scans from the Skulpturhalle. While waiting for updates, I will share more scans that I have done at other museums. For those who haven't heard about my project, it involves traveling to the Skulpturhalle Basel museum in Switzerland to 3D scan a collection of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture plaster casts. Check out http://ThroughAScanner.com for more information. I recently captured a colossal bust of Ramesses II, also known as the 'Younger Memnon', at the British Museum in October 2012. I printed it at around 4" tall and cast another copy in bronze at about 10" tall with brightly colored finish (available for sale). This piece is a fascinating artifact; weighing 7.25 tons, it was carved from two-colored granite and features the sculptor's unique interpretation of conventional conventions to relate the work to the viewer. It was discovered by Giovanni Belzoni in 1816 and inspired Percy Bysshe Shelley's famous poem 'Ozymandias'. The British Museum's statue is a high-quality piece, but my scan isn't as sharp due to shooting from a distance with poor lighting. However, the overall form is there, and some hieroglyphs did come through. It makes for an easy print and looks plausible as a "real" object even at small scale.
