Using the S3D processes and some tricks, you can force layer order and reprint on the same spot in a precise sequence to achieve semitones from just 2 extruders. Basically, check out the FFF S3D process example - they work well. Different materials mix differently, for instance, a semi-transparent PLA will have less density when mixed with an opaque material. A 50/50 ratio won't give you the exact semi-color; it depends on the filament used. I'm using BCN3D White PLA and Silver PLA in this example. Using other colors will change the results. It's very important to have the best possible calibration. On my BCN Sigma, fine-tuning is easy with the menu control - no need to redo print calibration, but I still need a simple color-mixing calibration print for fine-tuning because when printing on the same spot with 2 heads to get the best repetition possible, it's essential to have more than naked-eye calibration. For most materials, the right amount of flow is always higher than just 100%, so a total mix of 120% (40-80 / 100-20 etc.) will give better colors. Beyond 0.12 0.14 layer height, you might get a 'lines' effect between layers; the thinner the resolution, the better the color appears to the eyes. Of course, it's very hard to get perfect colors - sometimes it just depends on the materials, and some mix better or worse. But especially, the flow depends on the color density of the material. Check out the S3D processes and have fun with them! Tips: Using 0.1001 instead of 0.1000 will force that process to print 'after' the other, which means you can even more strongly enforce the 'order' of the color-mixing. This is very important for getting a constant semitone. You can avoid printing infill for one of the colors mixed, but I prefer to print at least 5% to get a more even cooling for small objects - feel free to play with this as you see fit. On S3D, the FIRST process sets the FAN speed. Don't set fan speeds for any other process than the first to print on the bed; otherwise, the fans will go on and off, which is important for getting a constant air flow and avoiding stuttering the boards due to too many instructions in just one second.
