On September 27, 1629, Ottavio Guarini was a 23-year-old young man, the son of Count Alessano from Lecce and Knight of Malta. He was killed in Giuliano di Lecce, under circumstances that remain unclear, victim of the Cicinielli, powerful feudatories of that place who also struck the archpriest Donato Borrello, who died a few months later from his injuries. This column topped with a Maltese cross commemorates the tragic event.
