Colonia Lighthouse - Uruguay
myminifactory
Welcome to Colonia del Sacramento! This iconic landmark in Uruguay sits proudly on the Río de la Plata river, nestled in the historic heart of old town. This extraordinary settlement boasts a rich history and its unique charm has been carefully preserved, showcasing a blend of colonial Portuguese and Spanish architectural styles - control of the town changed hands between the two powers by force until it finally became permanently Spanish, and later earned independence as Uruguay. The lighthouse itself was constructed in 1857 to meet the pressing need for light guidance when navigating the powerful currents of the river and arriving from the Atlantic Ocean. This one-of-a-kind lighthouse features a square base, cleverly built upon a repurposed tower from the Convent of San Francisco Xavier, which now lies in ruins at its foundation. Standing 26 meters tall, its beam shines out to an impressive 7.8 nautical miles. Visitors are welcome to climb to the top and take in breathtaking views of the river and old town. We're thrilled here at MiniWorld to bring this captivating model to life, as we had the privilege of experiencing Colonia and its lighthouse firsthand.
