The Fort Saint-Elme completes the defensive works of Collioure and Port-Vendres. Since the 9th century, a watchtower (the Torre de la Guardia) has been transformed successively by the Kings of Majorca (14th c), by King Peter IV of Aragon (in 1344), by Louis XI (from 1462 to 1493), by Emperor Charles V (from 1538 to 1552 with Master Romio), and by Vauban (in 1680) to arrive at a magnificent fortress. Visitors are surprised and amazed by the exceptional view and high quality of all military works in Collioure and Port-Vendres. The fort is visited.
