Collective burial of Escoural Cave
cults3d
Skull-shaped cavities face each other on a plate containing collective burial of human bones and associated estate, covered by a protective layer of calcite that preserved the association between the burials and the estate. Long bones are also present, alongside ceramic vases. This collection was unearthed from the Cave of the Escoural during excavation and relocated to the National Archaeological Museum in the 1960s, where it is now part of a significant Neolithic necropolis or ossuary. The calcitic coating that envelops the burials has allowed the preservation of human remains, as well as their anatomical connections to a considerable degree.
