The Flavian Amphitheater in Rome, better known as the Colosseum, was constructed between May 24 and June 29, A.D. 70-80 under Emperor Vespasian's rule and later inaugurated by his son Titus. It was one of the world's most impressive spectacle buildings, overshadowed only by the nearby Circus Maximus, where thrilling chariot races were held. In this massive amphitheater, intense gladiator battles, known as munera gladiatoria, electrified crowds with their spectacular displays of strength and skill.
