Coldingham Trench 9 post-excavation
sketchfab
Trench 9 stretched out 10 by 4 meters, its length spanning east to west. This trench was handpicked through a public vote with DigVentures' global community members, who had weighed in on its selection. Based on geophysical anomalies pinpointed via a magnetometer survey conducted in 2013, this trench stood out. The survey revealed several promising features, including a possible rectangular structure encircled by an exterior ditch, another potential field boundary, and an unidentified magnetic anomaly. Three hidden treasures emerged within the Trench's depths, none of which had been anticipated from the geophysical survey. Two of these turned out to be post-medieval field drains – one running east-west, F902, and the other heading north-south, F901. These clever drainage systems consisted of single cuts filled with loosely packed stone, designed to efficiently drain the fields they served. The third feature was a tumble from a wall that angled north-east to south-west.
