The Human Genome Project was a major scientific endeavor that aimed to map out all of the genetic instructions contained within the DNA of humans. Led by the United States Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health, the project was completed in 2003 after more than a decade of research and development. A team of international scientists worked together to sequence the approximately three billion base pairs that make up the human genome.
