Dr Iskandar is captivated by clay vessels and household items commonly found throughout Southeast Asian kitchens. Inspired by these everyday essentials, he has created works based on the lesong (mortar and pestle), tingkat (tiffin carrier), kendi (a pouring vessel) and cooking pots like the kuali. The kuali resembles a Chinese wok in shape, with the Malay name given to a bowl-like pan featuring steep, sloping sides and a concave shape that tapers into a rounded bottom. Dr Iskandar observed various versions of this vessel across Asia – the wajan in Indonesia, kawali in the Philippines, chūkanabe in Japan, and karahi in India. These two kuali pieces were inspired by the sight of coffee beans being roasted in kualis on outdoor stoves, a common practice throughout the region from Bali to southern Laos' coffee plantations. The unique shape of the kuali allows for more precise heat distribution, resulting in perfectly even roasting.
